The group started life as the 80th Bristol (Filton Church) Scout Group and although we think it started earlier, the Group was first registered with The Scout Association in 1947. It was a sponsored group linked with St Peter’s Church and for most of its early existence it met in a hall attached to St Peter’s Church. The neckerchief was originally black with a scarlet border and white cross but this changed to the familiar green with orange border in 1950.
Around about 1974 when lots of County boundary changes were being made, the group changed its name to 1st Filton (St Peter’s).
It was also around this time that the Group probably outgrew the church hall so a band of volunteers got together and looked at how to accommodate the growing numbers of young people attending the Group. The result was to build a scout HQ on land leased from Filton Town Council at Nutfield Grove (the present HQ). The Group moved into its new HQ in 1983.
No-one is quite sure when it happened, but when the Group moved into its new HQ it was no longer a sponsored Group it was (and still is) an open Group, i.e. people can join us from any background or faith. However, we have retained the name St Peter’s in our title and we still feel an affinity with St Peter’s – we are invited to Church Festivals and regularly attend the Remembrance Day service.
Present-day 1st Filton Scout Group is part of the Brunel Scout District which largely covers North and North East Bristol. The group offers a wide range of activities for both boys and girls aged 5 ¾ to 14 ½ years which is accommodated within 1 Beaver Scout Colony, 2 Cub Scout Packs and 1 Scout Troop.
The young people are supported by well trained and experienced leaders. It’s fun being involved in the big adventure. Adult volunteers are always in high demand and very welcome - not just for the exciting front-end leadership roles but also for those important roles in the background – Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, gardener etc. Go to our volunteer page to register your interest.
Due to limited spaces, the group currently manages a waiting list for young people wishing to join. In order to join the waiting list please go to our joining page and fill out the form.
Please note that the group does allow young people to forego the waiting list, if their parents are willing to join the group as volunteers with the leadership team of their choice.
Finally, at 1st Filton we do try and educate the young people in many different ways that will help them not just in the now but in their future as well!
